1964 MG Midget

This 1964 MG Midget was acquired by the seller in 2016, at which time it reportedly had been parked for more than a decade . Over the ensuing 2+ years, the car was stripped and refinished in Sea Glass Metallic blue, received refreshed brakes and suspension, and had its existing 1,171cc Datsun A12 inline-four rebuilt and overbored by Rebello Racing. Other changes from stock include the installations of a Datsun five-speed manual gearbox, a pumpkin-pie-colored leather interior, the grille from an Austin-Healey Sprite, and Speedhut gauges. This modified Midget is now offered for sale just in time for the summer.

The body reportedly was stripped, repaired, and powder-coated before receiving a repaint in Sea Glass Metallic (781), a Toyota color; in-process photos of the paint- and bodywork can be seen in the gallery above. Chrome bumpers with overriders and an Austin-Healey Sprite grille are equipped, and the body-side trim was deleted. The E-Z ON Stayfast woven canvas top, seen raised below, was purchased in 2016 and fitted in June of 2019.

Painted 60-spoke 13″ wire wheels are fitted with knock-off chrome center caps and 155/80 Kumho Solus TA11 tires mounted in spring 2016. The suspension was rebuilt with new coil and leaf springs, bushings, control arms, and rebuilt factory lever shocks. Refreshing the brakes included new lines, cylinders, calipers, and shoes. The seller notes a soft brake pedal.

Pumpkin-pie-colored leather upholstery with white vinyl piping covers reproduction seats and hand-fashioned interior panels. The door caps and dashtop trim were polished and left exposed. Black rubber mats cover the floorboards, and black carpeting lines the transmission tunnel and the deck behind the seats. Three-point seatbelts with aviation buckles are equipped.

A riveted wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a two-tone painted dashboard and chrome-bezel instruments from Speedhut, including a GPS speedometer with a digital clock and an odometer that shows a little over 2.5k miles since the refurbishment; true mileage is unknown. A refreshed electrical system features a new wiring harness, generator, and regulator. A period All Transistor Motorola AM radio is mounted beneath the dash.

Power comes from a Datsun A12 inline-four that reportedly was installed by the previous owner in the 1980s. Rebello Racing of Antioch, California rebuilt and dyno-tuned the engine in 2016. The bore is said to have been increased to 1,300cc, and forged pistons from JE Pistons were installed along with new rod and camshaft bearings, a timing set, and new valves, seals, and seats. The dual SU HS2 carburetors were recently synchronized, and the cooling system—which includes a vertical-flow aluminum radiator and twin electric fans—was converted from water-based antifreeze to Evans Waterless Coolant in 2018.

Power travels to the rear wheels through a Datsun 60-series five-speed manual transmission fitted with new seals, clutch, pressure plate, and shifter bushings during the refurbishment. The rear-axle seals and bearings were also replaced. A new exhaust system was installed, . Additional photos of the underbody are provided in the gallery.
