1964 Studebaker Avanti

This Studebaker Avanti R1 is one of a claimed 86 transitional “1963.5” examples produced in mid-1963. The car—chassis R4857—is finished in black over a black and tan–trimmed interior and features square headlamp housings as well as an asymmetrical hood bulge. Power is from a 289ci V8 equipped with a single four-barrel carburetor as well as a dual exhaust system, while shifting is through a three-speed automatic transmission. Further equipment includes power-assisted front disc brakes and 15″ steel wheels with spoke-style covers as well as an AM radio, a heater, and woodgrain interior trim. This Avanti is now offered on dealer consignment with transferable New York State registration listing the car as a 1964 model.

The Avanti was unveiled to the public at the New York International Auto Show in April of 1962 with fiberglass bodywork designed by Raymond Loewy. Square headlamp housings were introduced as a running change in mid-1963.

This example is finished in black and accented by polished trim as well as wraparound chrome bumpers with rubber guards. Further exterior details include an asymmetrical hood bulge, dual side mirrors, and dual exhaust outlets.

The 15″ steel wheels feature spoke-style covers and are mounted with Cooper Trendesetter tires measuring 215/75. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a two-place rear bench with black upholstery, which extends to the center console as well as the lower door panels. Tan upholstery covers the dash and upper doors, while woodgrain trim accents the steering wheel, instrument cluster, and center stack. Aircraft-throttle-inspired climate controls ahead of the shifter are accompanied by overhead switchgear for lighting and fan control. Additional amenities include an AM radio, a heater, quarter-vent windows, and front lap belts.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline accompanied by a 140-mph speedometer, a clock, and readouts for coolant temperature, amperage, fuel level, oil pressure, and intake manifold pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 61k miles.

A Beauty Vanity makeup mirror is located in the glovebox.

The 289ci Jet Thrust V8 was fitted with a single Carter four-barrel carburetor from the factory and rated at 240 horsepower.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission.

A Studebaker Factory Production Order Summary is included in the sale.
